Headwind

Headwind

I will face the wind.
Feel its strength as
it burns my skin.
Stagger and sway,
ready to fall
from it some days.
Recoup, confront its power.
Push against it
hour after hour.
Never give in
to the force
of the wind.

Veins

Veins

Veins run
throughout the body.
They look like
lines that divide,
compartmentalize.
Instead, they are
pathways to
the heart.

For Those Who Had Come Before

Those Who Had Come Before

I take in the words
of those who had
come before and
still come back for more.

They have lived that
of which they speak.
Backed their beliefs
with action and pushed
forward against those
many thought were
impossible to combat.

I digest all they say
am nourished by
their example,
stronger because
they are behind
me all the way.

We Won't Step Back

We Won't Step Back

We won't step back,
let some hack
threaten all
we believe in.

We won't let down
all who fought before,
who trusted us
to work for more.

We won't let them tell us,
won't let them sell us
a bill of goods that
takes away our rights.

We will gather in force
focused on the same course
and take the next step forward
together.

Tinder

Tinder

How did the fire start?
What was the spark?
When did it turn to flames?
How did it get out of control?
How will we recover?
What will we build in the empty space?

Mud

Mud

In the aftermath of the storm,
when temperatures start to warm,
ice and snow liquefy, mix with dirt
and create a new hazard--mud.

You have to watch your step.
You may still slip and slide,
get stuck or carry it into the house.
It doesn't melt it dries, crumbles,
becomes easy to sweep away.

Winter Coat

Winter Coat

Flakes fall in random patterns.
Settle softly and create a white coat.
Wrap warmly around the wearers.
No need for them to button up.

The Sun

The Sun

The sun glowed like a bangle
then became invisible from every angle.

I saw it go down
and felt alone, on my own.

When next it sat above a cloud,
the sight made my heart sing out loud.

This form is called diminishing verse.
